An RCMP officer has been relocated and reassigned pending the outcome of an investigation into a video circulating online that allegedly shows him threatening to kill a suspect in Pelican Narrows, Saskatchewan.
The video which was posted to Facebook — by Debra Georges who claims to be the suspect’s aunt — shows an encounter between two police officers and an unidentified young man on Sunday, June 30.
The 10-second clip appears to show an RCMP officer pointing a gun at a kneeling suspect as another officer puts handcuffs on him. The officer pointing the firearm can be heard yelling “I’m going to f***ing kill you,” and later telling the suspect to “shut the f*** up,” before informing him he’s being arrested for possession of a weapon.
The video does not capture the entire interaction between the suspect and the officers. However, RCMP say “the audio is concerning.”
The circumstances of the arrest, both before and after and the language used, is now under review.
On Monday, the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations called for the immediate termination and charges against the police officer in the video.
“This video, which we have, clearly shows the racist and ignorant actions of this RCMP member in Pelican Narrows and reaffirms that racism still exists within the force,” said the statement.
Another video on social media shows a second arrest made by the same officer in the community of Pelican Narrows, during the early morning hours of June 30. The officer can be seen pointing a gun at a different man while yelling: “Shut the f**k up” and “don’t f**king move,” then handcuffing him.
According to an RCMP statement, the identity of the person being arrested in one of the videos cannot be confirmed under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. A machete was seized during that incident.
In the other video, the people arrested are currently under investigation.
The RCMP is also aware of a third incident involving the officer on June 30. It is under review as well.
The police officer has been temporarily relocated outside of the community and reassigned to non-frontline work pending the outcome of a Code of Conduct investigation.
Anyone with videos of these events is asked to contact any RCMP detachment.
Pelican Narrows is located approximately 510 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon near the Manitoba border.
