IIU investigating after marked cruiser collides with van injures six
Six people were taken to hospital including two officers after a police cruiser blew past a stop sign and crashed into a van in the North End of Winnipeg over the weekend.
The crash happened around 7:20 p.m. Saturday and was captured by a security camera. The footage appears to show a marked cruiser traveling west on Aberdeen Avenue at a high rate of speed going through a stop sign at the intersection, before slamming into the side of a minivan heading southbound on Salter Street. The impact caused the van to flip on its side and it slid across the road.
Forensic investigators shut down the intersection after the crash for several hours.
According to a media release, police were investigating a suspicious male in the area when the crash happened. The four occupants of the van, as well as officers in the cruiser, were treated at the hospital and released.
The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba is investigating the incident.
Anyone who saw the crash or has video footage of it can call the IIU at 1-844-667-6060.
