ASIRT investigating police shooting in southeast Calgary

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called in to investigate an officer-involved shooting in southeast Calgary.

A press release states, at approximately 4:05 a.m., on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2019, police were called to a parking lot in a shopping complex, located in the 200 block of Shawville Boulevard S.E., for reports of a suspicious person armed with a bat who was making threats.

Police contained the area and encountered a man in his 30s who was believed to be armed with a weapon. The situation escalated at which time the man was shot by police.

After the shooting, the man failed to comply with demands and additional force was used to take him into custody. He was then transported to hospital.

A large machete-type knife was recovered at the scene.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The officer involved is an 11-year member of the Calgary Police Service and has been placed on a 30-day administrative leave.
