Winnipeg police identify woman found dead at house in Elmwood

A man was shot by police and a woman found dead at a house in the Elmwood area of Winnipeg, last Friday.

According to a media release, patrol officers responded to a domestic incident in the 300 block of Riverton Avenue.

Upon arriving, officers encountered a man at the residence.

A confrontation occurred and the man was shot by police. He was transported to hospital.

At the scene, police also located a deceased woman. She has been identified as Karen Jane Letniak, 48, of Winnipeg.

A post-mortem examination determined the cause of Letniak’s death to be a homicide.

The suspect remains in hospital in stable condition and is facing charges.

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba was notified and has assumed responsibility for the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

The Winnipeg Police Homicide Unit continues to investigate Letniak’s murder.

Her death is the city’s 32nd homicide this year.
