Winnipeg police have arrested and charged a man in connection with the stabbing of a child.

On Wednesday at approximately 2:35 a.m., police responded to a residence in the 300 block of Pritchard Avenue for a report a child was seriously assaulted.

Upon arrival, officers found a 3-year-old boy suffering from stab wounds and provided emergency first aid. The boy was transported to hospital in critical condition.

Members of the Major Crimes Unit identified a male suspect known to the family.

He has been named as Daniel Jensen, 33-years-old of Winnipeg.

Wednesday afternoon, a Patrol unit was travelling in the area of McPhillips Street and Leila Avenue when they spotted Jensen and placed him under arrest.

Investigators believe Jensen had been in the company of the child’s mother at an address on Main Street when she was assaulted by him. Jensen then went to the Pritchard Avenue residence, where the 3-year-old was sleeping and stabbed the boy before fleeing.

As of Thursday afternoon, the boy remained in grave condition and on life support. He has been identified by his family as Hunter Haze Straight-Smith.

Jensen has been charged with:

– Attempt to Commit Murder
– Assault Cause Bodily Harm
– Fail to Comply Condition Recognizance by Judge/Justice (x6)
– Fail to Comply with Probation Order

He was detained in custody.

Police say that the attempted murder charge is likely to be upgraded as a result of the boy’s death.

It would be the city’s 39th homicide in 2019.
