Winnipeg police identify victim of fatal stabbing in city’s West End

Winnipeg police have identified a man who was fatally stabbed at a house in the city’s West End.

On Thursday, at approximately 9:50 a.m., police responded to the 800 block of St. Matthews Avenue for a report of suspicious circumstances.

Upon arrival, officers located an injured man outside of a residence.

He was transported to hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced deceased.

The victim has been identified as Matthew Allan Sutherland, 28-years-old, from Winnipeg.

Members of the Homicide Unit continued with the investigation and identified a male suspect known to Sutherland. Investigators believed that two had been inside the residence, at which time Sutherland was stabbed and collapsed outside.

His death is Winnipeg’s 37th homicide in 2019.

Michael Alexander Spence, 32-years-old, from Winnipeg has been charged with second degree murder.

He was detained in custody.
