Prisoner recaptured after escaping from Yellowknife RCMP

A prisoner was recaptured after he escaped while handcuffed and outran Yellowknife RCMP on Saturday.

According to a news release, RCMP members were escorting prisoners to the Yellowknife courthouse for court appearances.

During the escort from the police vehicle to the courthouse cells, a handcuffed prisoner escaped custody.

A short foot pursuit ensued, however the prisoner remained at large.

Police called for backup and located the prisoner moments later in an apartment building near downtown Yellowknife.

He was brought back into custody and no one was injured during the incident.

Jacob Smith-Lafferty is charged with Escape Lawful Custody.

The Yellowknife Detachment has initiated a review of the incident.
