IIU investigating Winnipeg Police after woman’s arm broken during arrest

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba is investigating after a woman’s arm was fractured during an arrest by Winnipeg police on the weekend.

The Winnipeg Police Service reported an incident to the IIU that occurred at approximately 11:59 p.m. on Sunday in the 2600 block of Pembina Highway.

According to a news release, police responded to a call for a female in distress.

Upon arrival, officers observed a woman who appeared to be intoxicated and when they attempted to take her into custody she became uncooperative and resisted arrest.

After being handcuffed, the woman reported soreness to her left arm.

She was transported to Victoria Hospital where she was treated for fractures to her arm.

As a fracture to the arm is defined as a serious injury under IIU regulations, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
