ASIRT investigating after RCMP shoot and kill suspect in Lloydminster

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called in to investigate after an RCMP officer shot and killed a male suspect while trying to stop a stolen vehicle in Lloydminster.

According to a media release, on Sunday, at approximately 1:00 p.m., Lloydminster RCMP received a call about a stolen vehicle. RCMP members located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. An altercation occurred that resulted in an officer discharging their firearm, however the vehicle was able to flee the area.

At approximately 2 p.m., the vehicle was located by RCMP members in the central area of Lloydminster. A further altercation occurred that resulted in another RCMP officer discharging their firearm. The male driver was killed.

A female passenger was not injured. She was taken into custody without incident.

Two RCMP officers were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident involved officers from the Lloydminster, Kitscoty, Vermillion, Wainwright, Maidstone, and Onion Lake RCMP.

The Director of Law Enforcement has been notified and ASIRT has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the officer involved shooting and the actions of police.

The RCMP will continue to investigate the events leading up to the confrontation with police.
