An off-duty Winnipeg police officer was taken to hospital after she was attacked by a suspect on Tuesday morning.
According to a news release, at approximately 3:00 a.m., a police officer was leaving the headquarters building after completing her shift. As she was exiting the North West vestibule, when she encountered a man who was interfering with a delivery person in the lobby.
The off-duty officer followed the suspect man outside the building, at which time two, on-duty police cadets joined her. The suspect, without warning, turned and attacked the off-duty officer resulting in a struggle.
The officer sustained a serious injury and was transported to hospital in stable condition.
The two cadets, assisted by a uniformed officer and another off-duty officer, were able to subdue and arrest the suspect.
Bertram Charles Willcocks, 35, was charged with Assault Police Officer.
He was detained in custody.
