The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba is investigating the death of a 16-year-old Indigenous girl following an officer-involved shooting in Winnipeg.
On Wednesday evening, a group of teens allegedly robbed a Liquor Mart in Sage Creek and then fled in a stolen SUV. Police said a patrol unit was in the area when the robbery took place.
A high-speed chase ensued and the stolen SUV was involved in a collision with a number of vehicles at Lagimodiere Boulevard near Fermor Avenue, and an officer shot the female driver. She was transported to hospital in critical condition but was pronounced deceased.
She has been identified as 16-year-old Eishia Hudson.
Four other teens, — two boys, 15 and 16 years old, and two girls, 15 and 16 years old — were arrested and face a list of charges, including robbery, disguise with intent, possession of stolen property and motor vehicle theft, among others.
They were detained in custody.
No one else was injured during the incident.
The IIU was notified and has assumed responsibility for the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
Witnesses or other individuals who have information or video footage that may assist the investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll free at 1-844-667-6060.
