A nine-year-old boy has been found deceased in a Winnipeg river after being missing for nearly three days.

Winnipeg police say Darius Bezecki was found dead in the Red River Sunday.

Darius went missing after entering the river adjacent to the Louise Bridge Friday evening.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services (WFPS) received a call about a person in distress in the river just after 4:30 p.m..

Darius is believed to have gone into the water on the north side of the Red River, which is west of the bridge, but police can’t confirm the exact location.

Police said Darius lives near the river and he was riding bikes with his siblings and a friend before he went missing in the water. It was not clear why the children went into the river.

The boy’s parents have been notified.

Police wouldn’t say where along the river the child was found, out of respect for his family.

Police used boats, dive teams, a thermal imaging drone and general patrol officers during the search.
