A woman has died after escaping from an Indigenous healing lodge in Winnipeg, earlier this month.
According to a Correctional Services of Canada news release, on August 18, Nikki Alfonso, an inmate from Eagle Women’s Lodge, a multi-level security women’s healing lodge, died while unlawfully at large following her escape from the facility on August 2.
At the time of her death, Alfonso, 31-years-old, had been serving a sentence of 4 years and 6 months for multiple charges including failure to attend court, material benefit from sexual services and assault with a weapon.
The inmate’s next of kin have been notified of her death. Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) extended its condolences to the family.
