Winnipeg police arrest second suspect in January 2019 homicide

Winnipeg police have arrested and charged a second suspect in connection with a homicide in January of last year.

On January 7, 2019, emergency services personnel responded to a residence located in the 500 block of Burrows Avenue. Dexter Cortavista Dejarisco, 31, had been shot with a homemade gun. He was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Shortly after arrival, police detained Benny Lance Hansen, 34, at the scene. Hansen was arrested and initially charged with aggravated assault and multiple weapons offences.

On January 15, 2019, Dejarisco, succumbed to his injuries. Hansen’s charge was upgraded to second-degree murder after Dejarisco’s death.

Members of the Homicide Unit continued with the investigation and identified a second suspect.

On Thursday, Brennan Eugene Robert Bercier, 24, was placed under arrest. He has been charged with second-degree murder.

Bercier was detained in custody.

It is believed that Hansen and Bercier are acquaintances and were together when Dejarisco was shot.

Police say no further arrests are anticipated at this time.
