Winnipeg police say homicide investigators have upgraded charges in the death of Valentine Ernest Sumner who was killed outside a Main Street bar on July 18.

Christopher Michael Grozelle, 26, has been charged with manslaughter.

Grozelle was previously charged on July 24, with aggravated assault in relation to the attack on Sumner.

He was detained in custody.

At the time, police said the victim was involved in an altercation outside of a hotel/beer vendor in the 800 block of Main Street just before being found lying in the roadway.

It is believed that there were a number of witnesses to the assault and investigators asked to speak with anyone that could provide information.

Sumner was the city’s 22nd homicide of 2020.
