IIU investigating after man dies while in custody of Winnipeg police

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the death of a 40-year-old man after his arrest by Winnipeg police.

According to a media release, on November 4, at approximately 1:00 a.m., general patrol officers arrested a man during a traffic stop on Talbot Avenue in relation to drug offences.

The man was transported to police headquarters. At around 3:11 a.m., he was observed to be in medical distress and unresponsive, and first aid was administered.

The man was taken by ambulance to St. Boniface hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Winnipeg police notified the IIU of the man’s death.

The investigation is ongoing.
