Woman charged with second-degree murder in death of Tamara Benoit

Police have made another arrest in connection to the death of a missing Metis woman.

Tamara Benoit (Norman), 36, was reported missing to the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) on July 10, 2020. She was last seen in the Portage la Prairie and Long Plain First Nation area on May 23.

On September 3, the Manitoba First Nation Police Service (MFNPS) located human remains near Cottonwood Drive in the rural municipality of Portage la Prairie. The remains were those of Tamara. 

On January 5, 2021, a 15-year-old boy from Winnipeg was arrested and released without charges.

The next day, Ryan Peters, 37, from Long Plain First Nation, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

He remains in custody.

On Friday, RCMP investigators, along with officers from the WPS and the MFNPS attended to a residence in Winnipeg and made a third arrest in relation to Tamara’s death.

Tova Jeanine Peters, 36, of no fixed address, has been charged with second degree murder and accessory after the fact to murder.

She remains in custody

According to media reports Tova is Ryan’s sister.

Ryan is also Tamara’s long-time partner and they have children together.

The investigation continues.
