Winnipeg police have arrested and charged a man following a fatal assault in the city’s West End on Wednesday morning.

According to a media release, at 2:07 a.m., emergency personnel responded to the 400 block of Beverley Street after a severely injured male had been found outside of a home.

The victim was transported to hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries.

The deceased victim has been identified as Derek Scott Sutton, 37, of Winnipeg.

Members of the Homicide Unit arrested a suspect in connection with the killing of Sutton.

Justin Patrick Monro, 27, of Winnipeg, has been charged with second-degree murder.

He was detained in custody.

Investigators believe that Monro and Sutton knew each other and had been involved in a dispute which escalated to an assault with a weapon. Monro fled and Sutton was found soon after.

Sutton’s death is the city’s 8th homicide of the year.
