Winnipeg police arrest 22-year-old man after senior killed in hit and run

Winnipeg police have arrested a suspect after a 82-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run in the city’s West Alexander area on Tuesday morning.

According to a media release, on June 15, at approximately 8:20 a.m., the man attempted to stop a break, enter and theft in progress at a business in the area of Logan Avenue and Tecumseh Street

The victim was struck and killed by a truck and the driver fled the area.

Winnipeg police released a photo of the vehicle that was involved in a hit-and-run on Logan Avenue, Tuesday.

The man was rushed to hospital, in critical condition, where he died.

The deceased victim has been identified as George Birch of Winnipeg.

The Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation, and Matthew Jacob Hildebrand, 22, of Winnipeg, has been charged with manslaughter, break enter, theft and failure to stop after accident resulting in death.

He has been detained in custody.
