Winnipeg police arrest two suspects in connection with fatal shooting of Toronto man

Winnipeg police say a year-long investigation has led to the arrest of two suspects in the shooting death of a man from Toronto, Ontario.

On August 26, 2020, Mohammed Yonis Ali, 21, was found with gunshot injuries in the 800 block of Aberdeen Avenue. He was transported to hospital in critical condition. Ali succumbed to his injuries two days later.

On May 28, 2021, police released dashcam footage of two males where the shooting occurred.

On September 2, 2021, homicide detectives arrested Nootin Kasipigositmikise Fontaine, 25, of Victoria Beach, MB, and charged him with first-degree murder. Fontaine remains in custody.

On August 25, 2021, detectives arrested Arturo Andres Carrasco, 24, of Winnipeg and charged him with first-degree murder. He remains in custody.

Carrasco is also facing charges for three shooting incidents in Winnipeg not previously released by police.

1. On July 20, 2019, multiple shots were fired into a vehicle parked on the 200 block of Johnson Avenue. Two occupants were in the vehicle, and one was slightly injured. An investigation led to an arrest warrant being issued for Carrasco for Attempt Murder and Discharge Firearm.

2. On September 24, 2019, two males left a bar in the 700 block of Main Street and were walking in the area of Jarvis Avenue and Maple Street. Two suspects were following them in a vehicle with who they had an earlier confrontation. Gunshots were fired from the vehicle striking one of the males in the upper body and a residence. The victim was transported to hospital where he was treated and subsequently released. An arrest warrant was issued for Carrasco for Discharge Firearm with Intent.

3. On September 27, 2019, Carrasco got into a heated argument with an adult male, resulting in Carrasco shooting him. The victim was treated in hospital and eventually released. An investigation led to Carrasso being identified as the suspect, and an arrest warrant was issued for Discharge Firearm with Intent.

The investigation into Ali’s death is still ongoing. Const. Rob Carver said additional arrests may be pending for people who assisted Fontaine and Carrasco.
